De La Salle Castletown

De La Salle Main House Castletown                         The Pastoral Centre

The Pastoral Centre is a three story stand alone building on the De La Salle complex in Castletown, County Laois. It was originally the Juniorate boarding school of the De La Salle Brothers catering for the thirteen to sixteen age group.  Then in the early eighties the Brothers began to host school retreats in the Centre, since then thousands of young people from all over Ireland have come through the Centre’s doors on retreat.

The Centre is in use (during the day), from Monday to Friday of the school year, and is wheelchair friendly. The two top floors have accommodation for overnights and are available for weekend and summer months. It annually caters for the Kildare and Loughlin, Meitheal training in June and accommodates the dancers from The Half-Door Club during the May Bank Holiday Ceilis held in Castletown  village.

The Centre has a very welcoming Reception area and a Lounge where tea and coffee is served to the students on arrival. The students can eat their packed lunch in the lounge or play indoor games provided.

Students can also avail of the outdoor facilities, four open air alleys, a yard with basketball hoops and soccer goals, as well as some beautiful walks in the grounds of the campus. The centre has two large  meeting rooms, a prayer room and four small group rooms. One of the large meeting rooms is    'the Chapel' with an exquisite mosaic of the Holy family and a depiction of De la Salle teaching. The Chapel also has some beautiful stained glass windows.

Castletown itself is an award winning village in the Tidy Towns competition winning the overall prize in 1998 and since recieving many awards.  The De la Salle Monastery is at the centre of the village.  The River Barrow runs through it with a beautiful salmon leap and river bank walks. The picturesque Slieve Bloom Mountains provide an eye catching view from the village. There are numerous walks and hikes in the mountains including some beautiful waterfalls and many opportunities to experience first hand the Master's hand at work in nature.
